Herons In Folklore
The confident stature of herons gives them a very regal appearance. Maybe this is why they were held in high regard by the upper classes of the 16th and 17th centuries and deemed ‘property of the crown’.
Aside from the rich and wealthy, fishermen also held a light to these masterful birds. They used to think that heron’s had some sort of magic scent on their feet that attracted fish right to them, explaining why they were such successful hunters. It was common for anglers to carry a herons foot with them as a lucky talisman.
